Guest insurance verification

How Canopy Connect verifies a guest's real auto insurance policy, and how verification credits work.

5 min read

Overview

Insurance verification confirms a guest carries their own active auto insurance, pulled directly from their real carrier through Canopy Connect, normalized into carrier name, policy number, coverage details, and effective dates.

This runs on a credit system: new accounts start with 5 free credits, and additional credits are purchased in packs of 10, 30, or 60. One credit is used per newly-successful verification.

Insurance verification pulls a guest's real policy details automatically.

How it works

  1. 1

    Send the verification link

Send a one-time secure link to the guest from their booking.

  2. 2

    The guest links their insurer

They connect their real auto insurance carrier through a secure, hosted widget.

  3. 3

    RentHive pulls the policy

Carrier, policy number, coverage line items, and effective dates are pulled and normalized automatically.

  4. 4

    Booking marked verified

Once an active, in-force policy is confirmed, the booking's insurance status updates.

  5. 5

    Restart if needed

Discard and resend the link if a guest needs to try again with a different policy.

Best practices

  • Keep an eye on your remaining verification credits, you'll see a low-balance nudge once you're down to 2 or fewer.
  • Buy credits in the pack size that matches your actual booking volume (10, 30, or 60) instead of topping up one at a time.

Things to keep in mind

  • A policy only needs to be active and in force to pass. RentHive doesn't enforce a specific minimum coverage amount, that judgment call is yours as the host.
  • An expired policy is reflected automatically the next time the booking is viewed or acted on, there's no separate proactive expiry alert sent out.
  • Each successful new verification uses exactly one credit. Re-checking an already-verified booking doesn't burn an extra credit.

What's automated

  • New accounts start with 5 free verification credits automatically, no setup required to use your first few.
  • Policy data (carrier, coverage, dates) is pulled and normalized automatically, with no manual data entry on your end.

Common questions

What happens if a guest doesn't have their own auto insurance?

Verification won't complete as verified. At that point it's your call as the host whether to proceed, request other coverage, or decline the booking.

Do unused credits expire?

Credits are tied to your account balance and used as verifications happen, check your current balance and purchase history directly in your insurance settings.
