Guest ID verification

How Stripe Identity verifies a guest's government ID and selfie before you hand over the keys.

4 min read

Overview

Guest ID verification runs on every booking through Stripe Identity: a government ID document plus a live selfie match, checked automatically without you having to review it by hand.

It runs per booking, not once per guest account, so a repeat guest is re-verified every time they book a new trip. This keeps the check current rather than relying on a stale one-time verification.

How it works

  1. 1

    Verification triggers automatically

As part of the standard booking flow, a verification session is created for the guest.

  2. 2

The guest submits their ID and selfie

They receive a secure link, open it on their phone or computer, and submit a photo of their government ID plus a live selfie.

  3. 3

    Stripe checks the match

The document and selfie are checked for authenticity and that they match each other.

  4. 4

    Status updates on the booking

The booking shows one of: pending, processing, verified, or requires input, updating automatically as Stripe completes its checks.

  5. 5

    Confirm before handoff

Check the booking shows verified before handing over the vehicle.

Best practices

  • Don't hand over a vehicle until a booking's status shows verified. Requires input means the guest needs to resubmit something, usually a clearer photo.
  • Set expectations with first-time guests: a clear, unexpired ID and a well-lit selfie is what gets them through quickly.

Things to keep in mind

  • Verification runs per booking, not once per guest account. A returning guest goes through it again on every new trip.
  • A booking that hasn't completed verification shouldn't be treated as a fully confirmed, protected trip.

What's automated

  • Verification status updates automatically as Stripe processes the guest's submission, no manual polling or follow-up required on your end.

Common questions

What if a guest's verification fails?

The booking's status shows requires input rather than verified. Most failures come down to image quality, ask the guest to resubmit with a clearer photo of their ID and a better-lit selfie.

Does the guest need a RentHive account to verify?

No, verification happens through a secure link sent directly to the guest, no account or login required on their end.
